Abandoned buildings are given a new lease of life through Scaf’s surreal murals. The self-taught French artist seeks out unconventional places to embellish his stunning depictions, from large animals to recognizable cartoon characters.
While it’s difficult to grasp the effect in a single photo, all of Scaf’s murals are rendered in two dimensions. But through perspective, light and shadow, he managed to create the illusion that the figures were not only painted on a flat surface, but that they were standing in front of or on a flat surface. To prove their authenticity, Scaf often poses next to his completed works so that viewers can understand what is 3D and what is not.
The locations of Scaf’s art vary, but are almost always in neglected places such as factories, houses, or even unused swimming pools. Once he gets to work, however, the walls quickly transform into portals for life-size characters to appear. In some of his works, it looks as if a dragon’s head is emerging from a dark cave, or a giant crocodile is emerging from a blazing arch.
